Buyer FAQ
Questions Yacht Buyers Ask
Choosing a boat, new versus pre-owned, offers and deposits, surveys, documentation and ownership costs — answered plainly.
Match the type to your use. Motor and flybridge yachts emphasize space and comfort; sport yachts favor performance; sportfishing boats are built around the cockpit; catamarans offer stability and shallow draft; sailing yachts suit those who enjoy passage-making. We can talk through the trade-offs.
Offers are normally made in writing and set out the price, deposit, conditions (such as survey, sea trial and financing), inclusions and timeline. We help you prepare a clear offer.
Deposit amounts and terms vary by transaction and are set in the written agreement. Deposits are commonly held by a neutral party. Make sure you understand when the deposit is refundable.
Fees depend on the surveyor, the yacht’s size and the scope. A survey with haul-out and sea trial usually takes a day or more, plus time to write the report. Ask surveyors for written quotes.
Depending on your agreement, you may renegotiate, ask for repairs, or withdraw. Use the findings to understand safety-critical items, maintenance needs and cosmetic issues separately.
Where appropriate, yes. A sea trial lets you and your surveyor observe the yacht under way, including engines, steering, systems and handling.
Ownership and registration, lien status, flag, Mexican import or temporary-import status, maintenance records and the inventory of included items. Have documents reviewed by appropriate professionals. See sale documentation.
Non-residents do buy yachts kept in Mexico, but the right approach depends on nationality, residency, flag and use. Seek advice from a licensed Mexican customs broker and maritime attorney.
Marine financing is available from some lenders, depending on the buyer, vessel and jurisdiction. We do not arrange or advise on financing; speak with lenders directly.
Plan for insurance, berthing, maintenance, fuel, crew, cleaning, haul-outs and repairs. Our ownership costs guide breaks this down.
